Frequently Asked Questions

Why hire an arborist?

Arborists in Connecticut are competent, dedicated, aware of the greater good, and motivated to uphold the standards of their field. Arborists in the state are professionals who have gone through a rigorous testing process consisting of three separate exams. Arborists must prove their knowledge in tree biology, condition and health, and must also demonstrate proper and sage methods for diagnosing and treating tree problems.

In the State of Connecticut only licensed arborists can advertise, solicit or contract to prune, cable, fertilize or spray trees on a commercial basis. The Connecticut DEP strictly regulates the Licensing of Arborists in the state.

As defined in the arborist law, arboriculture means any work done for hire…

  • To improve the condition of fruit, shade or ornamental trees
  • By feeding
  • Fertilizing
  • Pruning
  • Trimming
  • Bracing
  • Treating cavities
  • Or other methods of improving tree conditions
  • Protecting trees from damage from insects or diseases
  • Curing these conditions by spraying or any other method

How do I evaluate an estimate?

It is important to get more than one estimate, but don’t always accept the lowest bid. Examine each company’s credentials and written specifications to determine the best combination of price, scope of work, skill, and professionalism. Be wary of individuals who go door-to-door and offer bargains for performing tree work. Improper tree care can take many years to correct itself and, in some cases, it can never be corrected. Are you willing to take that risk with such a valuable investment?

What are trees worth?

For practical advice that may help you find out what your trees and plants are worth, visit treesaregood.com.

Can you give a price over the phone?

No. There are too many variables to consider when evaluating a tree; size, shape, location, equipment needed, accessibility. We are happy to provide a free estimate.

Do you have liability and workman's compensation Insurance?

Yes. We are happy to provide you with full insurance coverage certificates.

Does the Liability Policy specifically cover tree work?

A liability insurance policy must specifically cover tree work or a claim for property damage might be rejected. For example, if a liability policy is written for landscape service, a claim for damage to property caused by the felling of a tree and/or the equipment used in its removal might be rejected.

Are the coverage limits of the Liability Policy sufficient?

Per claim liability coverage should be large enough to sufficiently cover damage that could occur.

Why is it important for a Tree Service to carry Worker’s Compensation Insurance?

In the event that a worker is injured on your property Worker’s Compensation will cover his expenses while he is injured. The injured worker cannot seek damages against the property owner if they are covered by Worker’s Compensation. If the Tree Service does not carry Worker’s Compensation insurance an injured worker may sue the Tree Service and the property owner for damages.

Is Family Tree Care a fully insured Tree Service?

YES! Family Tree Care’s insurance is specific to arborists and tree professionals, and includes coverage for professional liability.

How soon will you do the work?

Family Tree Care makes every effort to get to your job in a timely manner. We are flexible and are willing to work with you and our schedule. Unfortunately there are some variables that are beyond our control; weather, job specifics and needs.

What equipment do you use?

Each job requires different equipment depending on the needs of the job and access to the trees and property.
