Pay it Forward
Why are we here? What is the best and highest use of our time on earth? Family Tree Care believes in the complete life cycle of trees…from seedlings to mature, living trees…to old and dying trees…and the afterlife of a tree.
Family Tree Care supports Trees For the Future by donating two trees for every one tree removed.
Family Tree Care donates its time and expertise to care for historically significant trees, like the Durham Hemlock on the Durham Town Green. This big, beautiful tree is near death. Like many hemlocks that have been recently lost, the Durham Hemlock was attacked by woolly adelgid and scale. As well, the soil surrounding the tree has been compacted. We now have this tree on life support and continue to monitor it’s health & well being.
Family Tree Care works with artists and artisans to turn trees that have been removed into furniture that has special meaning connected to the history of that tree’s wood. We recently completed a project in Middlefield that entailed removing about 20 trees due to age, and safety issues. Working with local artist and wood-worker, Ted Esselstyn, plans are underway to repurpose these trees into benches for use by the town.
Brothers Ted and Zeb Esselstyn along with David Slade of Family Tree Care, were featured on WFSB Channel 3 news about their collaboration on the City Bench project, in which benches were created from the New Haven Christmas Tree.
